Vegemite Toast
Salty, savory Vegemite melts into hot buttered toast for a bold, deeply umami bite with a crisp golden crunch.
Ingrédients
- 2 thick-cut white or wholemeal bread
- 1 tbsp unsalted butter · softened or at room temperature
- 1 tsp Vegemite · start small — it is very salty; add more to taste
Préparation
- 1
Toast the bread
Place the bread slices in a toaster and toast on a medium-high setting until deep golden brown and crispy on the outside but still slightly soft inside. Do not under-toast — the crunch is essential.
- 2
Butter immediately
As soon as the toast pops, lay it on a plate and spread softened butter generously and evenly all the way to the edges while the bread is still hot, so the butter melts fully into the surface.
- 3
Spread the Vegemite
Scoop a small amount of Vegemite — about a quarter teaspoon per slice to start — onto the buttered toast. Spread it thinly and evenly across the surface using the back of a butter knife. Add more only after tasting, as it is intensely salty and savory.
- 4
Serve immediately
Eat straight away while the toast is hot and crisp. Cut diagonally if desired.
