Ham & Cheese Sandwich
Savory deli ham and melted cheese tucked between golden, buttery toasted bread — simple and satisfying.
Ingredients
- 2 sandwich bread · white or sourdough
- 3 oz deli ham · sliced thin
- 2 American or Swiss cheese · sliced
- 1 tbsp unsalted butter · softened
- yellow mustard · to taste
- 1 tsp mayonnaise · optional
Directions
- 1
Butter the bread
Spread softened butter evenly on one side of each bread slice — this is what gives you that golden, crispy crust.
- 2
Add condiments
On the unbuttered side of one slice, spread mustard and mayonnaise if using.
- 3
Layer the fillings
Lay the ham slices evenly over the condiment side, then place the cheese slices on top of the ham.
- 4
Close the sandwich
Place the second bread slice on top, buttered side facing out.
- 5
Toast in a pan
Heat a skillet over medium heat. Place the sandwich in the pan and cook for 2-3 minutes until the bottom is deep golden brown, then flip and cook another 2 minutes until the cheese is fully melted and both sides are crisp.
- 6
Slice and serve
Transfer to a cutting board, let it rest for 30 seconds, then cut diagonally and serve immediately.
