Marmite Toast

Crisp golden toast slicked with butter and Marmite — salty, deeply savory, with a rich umami punch.

5 min2 servings

Ingredients

  • 2 thick-cut white or wholemeal bread
  • 1 tbsp unsalted butter · softened, plus more to taste
  • 1/2 tsp Marmite · or more to taste

Directions

  1. 1

    Toast the bread

Drop the bread slices into a toaster and toast on a medium-high setting until deep golden and crisp all over. If using a grill or broiler, toast under high heat for 1-2 minutes per side, watching closely.

  2. 2

    Butter immediately

As soon as the toast pops up, lay it on a plate and spread softened butter generously all the way to the edges while the bread is still hot, so the butter melts fully into the surface.

  3. 3

    Add the Marmite

Scoop a small amount of Marmite — start with about a quarter teaspoon per slice — onto the buttered toast. Spread it thinly and evenly across the surface using the back of a knife or a small spoon. The heat will loosen it and help it meld into the butter.

  4. 4

    Taste and adjust

Take a bite. If you want more intensity, add a little extra Marmite in thin streaks and spread again. Serve immediately while the toast is still hot and crisp.
