Steamed White Rice
Perfectly fluffy, tender white rice with separate grains, made simply on the stovetop as the ultimate everyday side dish.
Ingredients
- 1 cup long-grain white rice · rinsed until water runs clear
- 2 cup water
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 1 tbsp unsalted butter · optional, for extra fluffiness
Directions
- 1
Rinse the rice
Place the rice in a fine-mesh strainer and rinse under cold running water until the water runs mostly clear to remove excess surface starch.
- 2
Combine ingredients
Transfer the rinsed rice to a medium saucepan. Add the water, salt, and butter if using.
- 3
Bring to a boil
Place the saucepan over medium-high heat and bring the water to a rolling boil.
- 4
Simmer covered
Immediately reduce the heat to the lowest possible setting. Cover the pan with a tight-fitting lid and simmer gently for 15 minutes. Do not lift the lid.
- 5
Rest and steam
Remove the saucepan from the heat and let it sit covered for 5 minutes to allow the rice to finish steaming and firm up.
- 6
Fluff and serve
Uncover the pan and gently fluff the rice with a fork to separate the grains before serving.
