Home-Style Bolognese
A rich, hearty meat sauce simmered with tomatoes and herbs, perfect for tossing with your favorite pasta.
Ingredients
- 1 tbsp olive oil
- 1 yellow onion · finely diced
- 3 garlic · minced
- 1 lb ground beef · 80/20 blend
- 2 tbsp tomato paste
- 28 oz crushed tomatoes · one large can
- 1/2 cup beef broth
- 1 tsp dried oregano
- 1 tsp kosher salt
- 1/2 tsp black pepper · freshly ground
Directions
- 1
Sauté the aromatics
Heat the olive oil in a large pot or Dutch oven over medium heat. Add the diced onion and cook for 4 minutes until softened, then stir in the minced garlic and cook for 1 more minute until fragrant.
- 2
Brown the beef
Add the ground beef to the pot, breaking it apart with a wooden spoon. Cook for 6 to 8 minutes until fully browned and no pink remains, then drain any excess fat if desired.
- 3
Build the sauce base
Stir in the tomato paste and cook for 1 minute to deepen the flavor. Pour in the crushed tomatoes and beef broth, scraping the bottom of the pot to release any browned bits.
- 4
Simmer and season
Add the dried oregano, kosher salt, and black pepper. Bring the sauce to a gentle bubble, then reduce the heat to low. Simmer uncovered for 30 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the sauce is thick and rich.
